JOURNALING: WHY IT IS TRULY LIFE-CHANIGING

journaling

A few years back it was called diary. Nowadays it is a little fancier: people journal. It is basically the grown-up version of writing in your diary every night. No wonder it is so popular at the moment; it has helped millions of people over time. Writing your thoughts down was always a big thing. Da Vinci did it and so do entrepreneurs nowadays.

I always loved sitting in my bed with my diary and tell it about my day. When looking back I see that journaling not only helped my spelling but also my character.

HOW JOURNALING AFFECTS YOUR LIFE

You know the moment when countless thoughts are just rambling around in your head and you can’t grab one? You can’t get yourself to do the laundry or write the new blog post which is supposed to be published in an hour?

Reasons for that are your unorganized mind. But how does journaling actually helps you to clean up your mind?

  1. CREATIVE OUTLET

Journals can be in written form but also in pictures or paintings. You can bring your thoughts on paper in the way they want to be felt. Sometimes colorful, with no words or just a picture of an awesome day. ‘Dear Diary…’ sentences are in the past, nowadays there is nothing more important than bringing your vision to life. Journaling is art in every possible way.

  2. BRAIN DUMP

Journaling is not only awesome and fluttering for your personal life but also for the professional side of you! Unique ideas are coming your way when you let your thoughts flow from time to time. Organizing your ideas and visions in a brain dump will bring up stuff you have never thought of before.

  3. LIGHTENS UP YOUR MOOD

Know those days or even weeks when you feel like not doing anything at all and you just can not get out of that slump? This happened to me many times and the only way to get out of this rabbit hole is journaling for me. Maybe that affect has meditation or sports for you and that is totally fine. You don’t have to journal if it does not bring you any joy but it is worth a try.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT

There are a few ways that helped me to get the most out of the journaling process. Remember that we all have our own preferences and not all of these tips will work for you.

DON’T STRESS

First of all, don’t stress about writing every day. If you do, you will easily feel frustrated and disappointed for not keeping up. Write when you feel like it, and make time for it. If you are convinced to write every day you can dedicate some pages from your bullet journal to it.

Despite the general opinion I don’t think it is beneficial to journal every day for five minutes. I rather say you should do it whenever your mind tells you too. When it gets too messy in your head and you can’t get yourself to think straight.

MUSIC

Music or no music? Do what you prefer. Whilst writing I avoid to listen to music because it distracts me from my actual feelings. It also stops the time for me and I am in my little bubble.

I am looking for  a good playlist on Spotify for my writing process. Any suggestions?

SIT ON THE FLOOR

This might sound crazy but sitting on the floor while you are journaling helps to concentrate and get those words out of your mind. I am not kidding guys! Personally, I love to sit on the floor and journal my heart out. Try it yourself and tell me if I am just weird or if you feel it too. (;

NOTEBOOK

Don’t go looking for the perfect notebook because there will never be one that is perfect.  Every notebook is usable and it doesn’t really matter what it looks like. It is about the writing and not creating an art piece.

I know from experience that it can be really hard to stop procrastination and START.

WHAT ABOUT YOU

I’d love to know what effect journaling has on you. What have you learned from it? Any more advice on how to journal to get the most out of it?
