DO THESE 6 THINGS TO BEAT SOCIAL MEDIA OVERWHELM
A few weeks back I was feeling desperate and devastated. My Instagram feed wasn’t looking like I wanted it to and nobody was following me. I got on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and I was the same huge mess on there. Everyone else seemed to have perfectly branded and funny accounts with tons of cute pictures with their dogs.
Whenever I try to take a cute pic with my dog she runs away from me like I’m crazy.
At first I didn’t realize where all the negative feelings where coming from until I listened to the podcast episode “Social Media Stress and Sabbaticals” by Melanie from ImagineYou.
If you are a blogger or YouTuber you will probably know how hard it can be to keep up with all your accounts. Uploading content on a regular basis seems impossible and stressful, and you don’t spend more time than necessary on those platforms.
I will talk you through some really helpful tips to help you to post regularly but without getting stressed out about it.
There is an app called “Moments” which helps you to track your phone usage. You might be shocked by how much you unconsciously spend on your phone. I certainly didn’t expect to be on my phone for 3,5 hours. A DAY!
1|CHANGE YOUR MINDSET
Social media overwhelm is basically a mindset problem. You feel anxiety and stress because your mind tells you to feel that way in order to avoid disappointment. I certainly felt like I was trying my best to get more followers but in reality I wasn’t.
Remind yourself that social media is not only for you to promote your new blog post or video but also a place of joy and happiness; a corner made for you to gather inspiration and support.
2| CHOOSE 2-3 PLATFORMS
When I starting to grow my audience I thought I would have to be on every given social media site. I didn’t realize I was busy checking all my accounts but wasn’t posting valuable content or pictures which I was mainly judging myself for.
Therefore I would recommend you to focus on 2-3 platforms on which you are actively posting on. You can leave a little note in your bio on the ones you decided not to focus on, saying if people want to hear more from you to check out your other accounts on which you are more active.
I am still in a testing phase where I try to figure out which ones I like to support my blog.
TIME-OUT! Close your laptop, turn off your phone and/or tablet for a second, and try to just breath in and out. Go for a walk or do some awkward dance moves like me if you feel like it. Not being on any social media accounts for a few hours will not do any harm whatsoever!Unplug whenever your mind feels too messy. Click To Tweet
Honestly, nobody will even realize you are not online. You have a real life and scrolling through Pinterest for hours is fun, I get ya, but it will not have the same impact on you like a warm summer breeze.
4| TAKE OUT THE PRESSURE
I was putting so much pressure on myself to post awesome content several times a week that I didn’t post anything at all. Sure, posting everyday would get you more followers in less time but it would burn you out pretty quickly.
Accepting your own routine is gonna help you tons! Of course you could also schedule your posts in advance which would take out the pressure because you would have to dedicate only a few hours a month to that.
5|STOP BEING FAKE
Maybe you are guilty of doing it yourself: the follow-unfollow tactic. I have tried it myself and felt shitty afterwards. I want people to follow me because they like me or my content but not just because I followed them in the first place.people, stop being fake! Click To Tweet
We all know those people with 100k followers and more selfies than you could imagine. The intention on social media should be to inspire and keep in touch with others. How does posting a picture of yourself add value to other people’s life? Post content that has a meaning behind it because otherwise you will end up feeling frustrated with your community and yourself.
Not genuine followers will not buy your products nor will they visit your website. You need people who support, comment and like. In order to get them you will have to get rid of that negative attitude towards social media because your followers will recognize.
Means: Only follow people who actually inspire you!
6|TAKE A BREAK
No, no. Don’t just skip section because you think this is not an option for you. Listen to me first!
Some of you might not even consider this but taking a break will help you tons. You will feel lighter and get back to the roots. Means you will think about the reasons why you even started your blog, or creative business in the first place. So, why did you? Let me know in the comments below!
Remind yourself that taking a break doesn’t mean you are failing; it is more that you are looking after yourself. Your followers will benefit from the time-out too because you will be able to post more incredible content again!
Means: You are NOT a failure if you take a time-out!
